1956-11-15 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 11/15/1956 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, John C. Birmingham, Saul J. Cagan, Dorothy Cook, Frederick Pierce, Carolyn StandIcy, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., and Russell P. Brown Others present: Sgt. Shaw, Beverly Police Dept. Recorder: Marion A. Brown Thursday November 15, 1956 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30. Present were Mrs. Conrad, Mrs. Cook, Miss StandIcy, Mr. Cagan, Mr. Birmingham and Mr. Pierce, Mr. Tooracy. The records of the last meeting were read and approved. The Finance sheets were discussed and the proposed Budget for 1957 was presented by the Budget Committee. It was voted to adopt the budget as presented except for adding $25 to Express because of increased charges. 1957 Budget - Salaries (including a new assistant) 51,957.62 Maintenance $16,775 Other outlays: - Book cases etc. $1000 New Furniture 1000 Card cabinet for Children's Room $300 3d floor flooring $1000 New roof. Mrs. Conrad after viewing the roof of the Main Library explained that the roof surface is in reasonable condition, skylight ~ashings and glass need replacing as many panes are cracked. The chimney metal stack is in poor condition, copper flashing around stacks are in very poor condition and very loose. Parapet needs pointing. It was decided to call the City Building Inspector in to make a survey and obtain other estimates. A letter was read from Mrs. Fortunato stating that she must resign as of Dec. 1. A move was made to accept with deep regret. An application for work from Mrs. Minnie Dunklee was read. It was decided to hire her on a trial basis subject to further arrangements. Voted to take Mrs. Isabelle Gibbs staff with same arrangements until she is able to become a full-time Staff Member. The meeting was intervened when Traffic Sgt. Shaw arrived at 8 o 'dock to explain that the City would like to have the use of the Winter St. land for a parking lot. As the City is growing, a bad intersection at Essex and Dane Streets which had been the scene of many bad accidents and parking in front of the Building should be stopped as it is a traffic hazard. A proposed plan was presented and discussed. It was also explained that the Mayor hoped that the Trustees would cooperate at no expense to the Library and would be absolutely controlled by the Trustees. After further explanation and some discussion it was suggested that further study was necessary. Mrs. Conrad thanked Sgt. Shaw for coming and a motion was made to take the matter under advisement. A letter was read from the Dickson Truck Service Co. explaining several agreements that could be made as to purchasing a Bookmobile. Mr. Birmingham recommended that the Co. be offered $2750 and then have it painted with Library' s name. It is a 1949 GMC Custom made body - six years of service by Boston Public Library been 27000 miles and original cost was $16,000. It was suggested that inquiries should be made first as to repairs and maintenance. Voted to adjourn Marion A. Brown Clerk
