April 29, 1948
The regular meeting of the Board was called for Thursday, April 29 at 7:30 P.M., but
since only three Trustees were present - Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Mr. Birmingham were
present, all action was taken subject to approval at the next meeting of the Board.
The records of the meeting of March 26 were read and approved as was the report of the
Finance Committee giving an itemized account of expenditures and balances to date.
The Administration Committee, through Mr. Delaney, reported that visits had been paid to
the Deposit Stations at Ryal Side and Noah Beverly and to the Branch at Beverly Farms.
Mr. Hazell, at Ryal Side, said that because of increased rent of his store, he felt that his
salary should be increased at once. He was told that if he wanted this request brought formally to
the attention of the Trustees, he should apply to the Trustees before the budget was made up next
November.
The Deposit Station was in good condition, though the circulation had decreased during
the past few years.
The Noah Beverly Deposit was in excellent condition, though it was apparent that new
books were badly needed. (This has been attended to.)
At Beverly Farms many repairs were needed. The bean pole fence at the back and on one
side of the grounds needed to be attended to; the wire fence on the Hale Street side needed to be
extended, to fill in the space left vacant by the removal of the bandstand; and the front steps were
sorely in need of pointing up.
It was voted to authorize Mr. Delaney to have this work done at once, since there could
be no question of the need for such repairs.
The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 180 new titles and the
acceptance of 37 books. This was approved.
The Librarian's report, describing the month's activities - especially the Spring Book
Festival in the Children' s Department, which had been a huge success - was presented and placed
on file.
Miss Hester Mitchell, who had been a member of the Staff for nearly fifteen years, sent to
the Board her letter of resignation, since she is leaving to become Children's Librarian at the
Parlin Library in Everett, at a salary of $500.00 more than she has been receiving in Beverly.
This was accepted by the Trustees with great regret.
Voted: to adjourn
