2002-11-07Beverly Cultural Council
Minutes of Nov. 7, 2002
7 p.m. Council Chambers, City Hall
Members present: Lou Ann Faria, Jan Plourde, Brad Waldron, Rachel Pohl, Doreen
Ushakoff
The purpose of tonight's meeting was to hear five-minute presentations from LCC grant
applicants.
Lou Ann presided, informing each applicant that funding had been cut, and at the time we
were sure of just $7,100. As the applicants came forward, council members took notes,
preparing to discuss the applications at the next council meeting. Council members asked
questions of applicants for clarification purposes (i.e. to ascertain exact dates of
performances, whether events would be open to the public, etc.).
Although the applicants kept to their schedules, the council became aware about 8 p.m.
that there was a gap in the proceedings. Shortly thereafter, several applicants arrived
through the rear door of the Council Chambers. It was discovered that the front door of
City Hall, where a sign had been posted informing applicants to come to the third floor,
had been locked. It was decided unanimously that failing to attend this hearing session
would not negatively impact applicants, since it was likely that many would not know to
enter through the rear door.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 p.m. No discussion among council members about
the specific merits of the applications took place.
